What we check before we quote
Sheen is a maintenance decision
Gloss black shows dust, fingerprints, and every polish swirl; matte and fine-texture coats hide all three and grip better against stacking scuffs. For working bars we default to low-sheen finishes and save gloss for rooms with a dedicated polishing habit.
Black hides wear, but only until the substrate shows
The failure mode of a cheap black stool is bright silver flashing through at the footrest and leg contact points. Coating thickness and prep decide when that happens, which is why we buy finishes by specification rather than by photo.
